There is a theory that as machines become more and more advanced, they will gradually acquire intelligence. A phenomenon known as "the singularity"
Pokeballs are an ultra-advanced technology that was invented only recently. With the rising popularity of pokemon-training, pokeballs quickly became popular and mass-produced.
Nobody has yet noticed that, given time, an empty pokeball seems to take on a life of its own.
By design, a pokeball is capable of capturing and containing any creature. In practice, it is used by trainers to acquire pokemon.
But what if a pokeball had a mind of its own? How might it choose use its power?
What is contained within the mysterious voltorbs that are sometimes seen in the wild? Did they turn on their masters?
Do they have a master plan? Where are they taking their cargo?
Is there a destination, or do they simply trade amongst themselves.

If a pokemon dies while inside of a pokeball, it'll absorb that pokemon's energy and conciousness.
The pokemon reawakens AS the pokeball.
